Knee Care

Knee pain isn't merely frustrating; it can actually be disabling, making it challenging to carry out simple, everyday responsibilities. It can impede a person's ability to work, carry out household tasks, or simply enjoy life with friends and family. And when left untreated, pain in the knee can worsen. This is what makes it so important to consult with a knee doctor after sustaining a knee injury or experiencing knee pain.

Conditions, Disorders, and Injuries

Our knee specialists are highly experienced in treating a wide range of knee issues. These include conditions impacting the ligaments, the kneecap, the cartilage, and the knee joint itself. Some of the most common causes of knee pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Cruciate ligament injuries
  • Fractures
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Shin splints
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Sprains
  • Tendonitis
  • Torn ACL and other ACL injuries
  • Torn meniscus

Any of these conditions or injuries can be painful, but with the proper care, it's possible to experience total pain relief and recover your full range of mobility. The first step is to visit a knee doctor who can evaluate the problem and recommend the best course of action.

Comprehensive Knee Care: From Diagnosis to Recovery

At the first appointment with one of our knee surgeons, patients should expect a full physical evaluation as well as X-rays and other imaging, which are necessary to ensure the proper diagnosis. In some cases, your knee doctor may wish to perform an arthroscopy, which allows them to see inside the knee joint.

There are several different treatment options for those experiencing knee pain. In some cases, nonsurgical treatment options work best. These might include the use of ice, heat, compression, or pain medication. Often, stretching and physical therapy go a long way toward relieving pain and restoring mobility. Injections are also commonly used to offer pain relief.

When these nonoperative treatments stop working, your surgeon may recommend a surgical procedure, such as a partial knee replacement or a total knee replacement. We perform both of these procedures in our state-of-the-art surgery center, and patients who undergo these procedures usually have excellent recoveries. During a knee replacement, either part or all of the joint is taken out and replaced with an implant. This relieves the discomfort and gets you back on your feet again.

Of course, with any surgery, there is a need for some recovery time, and knee surgery is no exception. Following your surgery, you can expect to be off your feet for a few days, and it may be a few months before you feel totally normal again. The use of ice can reduce swelling, and pain medication can be administered to minimize discomfort. Speak with your specialty-trained knee surgeon to learn more about the recovery process and the steps you will need to take during it.

Another important part of the recovery process is physical therapy. Working with a physical therapist is imperative for ensuring that your body heals quickly and properly, and it significantly reduces the risk of postoperative complications. For most patients, physical therapy begins within one or two days of the knee surgery itself.

Our knee doctors are here to help relieve your discomfort and get you on your feet again as quickly as possible. Whether that requires orthopedic surgery or some simpler remedies, we're here to ensure proper care and a healthy recovery.
