With more and more people traveling the information highway and spending extended amounts of time using keyboards and a mouse, there is an increased number of people who are exhibiting symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a severe swelling of the ligaments and tendons in your forearm which extend down through your wrist. Carpal tunnel is most often caused by repetitive hand motions, repetitive bending of the wrist or a broken or dislocated bone in the wrist. Mild to moderate cases can be treated by wearing a brace or through cortisone injections. In severe cases, however, surgery may be necessary to provide relief from consistent pain. OAK orthopedics has skilled surgeons who specialize in this procedure and perform it on an outpatient basis, and provide proper follow-up rehabilitation for your hand.
Arthritis is a condition that affects over 30 million people in the United States. Arthritis, simply stated, is an inflammation of a joint. However, it can be a very painful and serious disability. Basal joint arthritis affects the joint at the base of the thumb where it joins the wrist. This type of arthritis can affect your ability to use your hand effectively, and in acute cases, cause total numbness. If diagnosed early, this type of arthritis can be treated with a splint, medications or anti-inflammatory injections. However, if the joint is critically damaged, surgery may be required to eliminate the pain. This common procedure performed by the O.A.K. HandCenter™ involves removing the diseased joint, and rebuilding it with existing tendon. After the surgery, we will recommend a number of rehabilitation exercises that will increase strength.
